When a website becomes large enough to require a dedicated server, most administrators are quick to find a relatively priced server, and jump aboard. However personally, I’ve taken the time to look through multiple server providers; most of which have their own Data centers, and of course have been relatively impressed.

This time I’ve left the Dedicated Server for another time and given cloud computing a try. VPS.net run a powerful cloud private server system in which the user can buy ‘nodes’ for a price depending on the amount of nodes needed. The beauty in this is that I am able to change the amount of nodes i have at any time, without the sluggish delay of a normal VPS provider. For around $100, you can compete with many dedicated server options, while having the amazing backing of the VPS.net panel. Did i mention you can also move your services between the US and UK cloud?

At first i was a little weary about the Disk usage, most clouds run through a SAN disk array, meaning multiple servers would be connected to a storage server, which could perhaps be greatly overloaded. Thankfully it was not. And in fact was quite the opposite, with no I/O issues whatsoever. The actual system itself was not slow, and provided for whatever i needed, and is versatile enough for the developer.

I would definitely recommend VPS.net as a substitute to a Dedicated Server, especially for those with fluctuating services requiring different levels of ‘nodes’, also let it be known that the VPS.net nodes are extremely versatile and great for anyone with a project developing, or the hobbyist.

Edit: Received a few messages about the SAN used by vps.net, however i was referring to the speed and stability of the SAN, not the lack of one.
