For $5.95 you can 512mb of ‘guaranteed’ memory, 1tb of bandwidth and 20GB disk space, along with DDoS protection, and basic management!

The offer seems to good to be true, typically a $5 VPS won’t give you anywhere near the specs of this one. However Burst.net do use the openvz platform, which allows overselling.

When a website becomes large enough to require a dedicated server, most administrators are quick to find a relatively priced server, and jump aboard. However personally, I’ve taken the time to look through multiple server providers; most of which have their own Data centers, and of course have been relatively impressed.

This time I’ve left the Dedicated Server for another time and given cloud computing a try. VPS.net run a powerful cloud private server system in which the user can buy ‘nodes’ for a price depending on the amount of nodes needed. The beauty in this is that I am able to change the amount of nodes i have at any time, without the sluggish delay of a normal VPS provider. For around $100, you can compete with many dedicated server options, while having the amazing backing of the VPS.net panel. Did i mention you can also move your services between the US and UK cloud?

At first i was a little weary about the Disk usage, most clouds run through a SAN disk array, meaning multiple servers would be connected to a storage server, which could perhaps be greatly overloaded. Thankfully it was not. And in fact was quite the opposite, with no I/O issues whatsoever. The actual system itself was not slow, and provided for whatever i needed, and is versatile enough for the developer.

I would definitely recommend VPS.net as a substitute to a Dedicated Server, especially for those with fluctuating services requiring different levels of ‘nodes’, also let it be known that the VPS.net nodes are extremely versatile and great for anyone with a project developing, or the hobbyist.

Edit: Received a few messages about the SAN used by vps.net, however i was referring to the speed and stability of the SAN, not the lack of one.

(The Hosting News ) UK2 Group today announced the availability of R1Soft Continuous Data Protection® (CDP) across its extensive virtual private server cloud. VPS.NET (http://vps.net) now offers customers a more advanced level of data protection with user-ready CDP backups and individual file-restoration capabilities.

VPS.NET offers an “instantly deployable” image that can have a Continuous Data Protection (CDP) Server up and running in just 60 seconds giving customers complete administrative privileges over scheduling and managing their backups. The CDP software protects VPS.NET customers’ environments by performing asynchronous replication of the target servers and archiving only the deltas or changed blocks to disk. Each replication creates a full backup that typically only takes minutes to create, even on larger data sets. This gives VPS.NET customers the ability to perform more granular restores of individual files or folders as opposed to restoring the entire VPS.

CDP can replicate other VPS.NET virtual machines and physical servers to recovery points stored on disk. It can replicate and archive nodes inside the VPS.NET cloud as well as any Internet accessible Windows or Linux server. CDP recovery points provide VPS.NET customers the ability to perform more granular restores of individual files or folders as opposed to restoring the entire VPS.

“Our team has been working closely with R1Soft for months on this project and we are pleased to say that we can now offer our customers scalable VPS hosting with a trusted high-performance data protection offering that can be deployed within minutes,” said Ditlev Bredahl, CEO of UK2 Group.

With the new offering clients also have the flexibility to increase the storage space on their CDP Server in just minutes. R1Soft Agent licenses will be available to VPS.NET clients for $15 /month. The R1Soft CDP MySQL Add-on, a necessity for correct backups of all online MySQL databases, will be available for an additional fee. CDP for MySQL provides user-scheduled asynchronous replication of online MySQL databases and works with both MyISAM and InnoDB storage engines.

“As one of the first large deployments of CDP on the cloud, the opportunity to work with VPS.NET’s experienced virtualization team on this project has been very exciting for R1Soft. Adding CDP for Linux, Windows and MySQL, exemplifies VPS.NET’s commitment to offering customers a wide range of self-managed services,” said David Wartell, vice president of R1Soft, a division of BBS Technologies, Inc.

About VPS.NET and UK2 Group
VPS.NET (http://vps.net) is a recent addition to the UK2 Group, and offers affordable virtual private server cloud hosting. It is a redundant cloud system, which utilizes a RAID 10 SAN backend and node based VPS architecture. It also has immediate scalability with pre set up stacks, a simple billing process and a user friendly management portal.

(The Hosting News) – eUKhost.com, a provider of Shared, Reseller, Virtual Private Servers and dedicated servers, today introduced Enterprise Linux/Windows Dedicated Servers. The company states that starting at just £129 GBP per month, Enterprise Dedicated Servers will have a setup identical to its existing Shared Hosting Servers. These servers will have the same security settings applied, and they will also be actively monitored similar to the shared hosting servers they currently manage.

Besides the regular backups, each server will also be setup with RAID 1 in order to minimize potential problems and prevent subsequent data loss. It further states that all Enterprise Dedicated Servers are based on Linux or Windows Platform where each Linux Enterprise Dedicated Server will be pre-installed with cPanel/WHM control panel, while Windows Enterprise Dedicated Servers will be pre-installed with DotNetPanel control panel.

In order to guarantee the security and performance of these servers, the company has imposed certain security restrictions similar to those on their shared hosting servers. The main security restriction being the root/Administrator login not been given to the customers in order to ensure only the company technicians can perform software updates, security changes, maintenance and optimizations on the server which will enable the company to be in total control over the hosting environment. Having said that, the company is willing to provide root/Administrator details of these servers to the respective users upon request.

Ryan Watson, Business Development Manager at eUKhost, states “We found that many customers needed the power of a Dedicated Server, but only wanted the responsibility of a Shared Hosting account. We’ve made a special effort to simplify our dedicated server offerings and at the same time offer our customers the flexibility they need to run their online business without worrying about server management.”

Lions, tigers and hackers… oh my! Hackers and script kiddies are unfortunately constantly searching the Internet for insecure sites. If you have insecure or mis-configured software, it’s not “if” but “when” you will be compromised.

I’m not using this as scare tactic or as a reason to use our proactively managed virtual private servers, but as a fact from what we see every day. Unfortunately, the number of compromised servers we see hitting our network every day is staggering. For example, it’s not uncommon for us to block 50-100 new unique IP addresses daily for SSH or FTP brute force attempts. That’s just on a slow day. These are not Windows based desktops mind you, but Unix, Linux, or Windows based servers. You know, the servers that you would think are managed by system administration professionals.

Unfortunately it’s all too common for a web developer or designer think that buying a $99/month unmanaged dedicated server is all that is needed. Set it and forget it! Security is a continuous and never-ending process. Also many system administrators do not configure a server properly or too overtaxed putting out other fires. Even if you are not a HostCube customer, I strongly recommend hiring a qualified person or company to keep your server secure.

According to a Verizon Business study, the most common notification method of a security compromise is by a third party. So not only is the server software kept out of date, the software configuration is probably kept to defaults, but no monitoring exists when a comprise occurs. In this all too common case you might as well give away the keys and let the hacker do what they want with your setup!

Server security is about deploying layers; many different methods of proactive, reactive and defensive measures to protect from getting compromised. To give a high level view, here are the precautions we employ with managed virtual servers and managed servers:

Remove unneeded services

Employ best practices with software configuration (server hardening)

Automatic deployment of software updates

Hardware and local firewalls

Remote log storage

Backups (we can be used a method to audit a server)

Scanning for common Rootkits

Host Integrity Monitoring (HIM) to detect changes in operating system files

Unusual port and services detection

Monitoring services for availability and trends

Autoblock SSH/FTP attacks

Proper file and service permissions (sandboxing)

Monitoring log files and detecting server changes are some of the additional security measures we employ. We’ve just recently added Rootkit Hunter and Osiris host integrity monitoring to our list. Both tools monitor and detect attempted rootkits and any modifications to server setup. This additional monitoring makes our services fully PCI DSS compliant and just some of the features we perform to make sure a customer’s account is secure. You can rest assured knowing we are monitoring your managed virtual server very closely.

I won’t go into all of our security measures, nor details, but I will say the above list should be at least your security baseline. When choosing a provider, ask if they are really ‘managed’ and are performing these tasks for you. If not, you’ll definitely want to make sure you are addressing all these areas on your own.

We had high hopes for a useful addition to our services when we announced the VPSLink Load Balancing Beta in August, however, it appears as though load balancing was not the best fit for the services we offer at VPSLink.

Due to low demand for the service, we will discontinue load balancing on November 15th.

It does not appear as though many of our load balancing beta participants were making use of the service, however, we’ve sent a notification with a coupon code (should anyone decide to run HAProxy on an extra virtual private server). If you were using the load balancing service and you missed our notification, log in at My.VPSLink.com, go to Services > Add Services, and sign up for a new VPS on a monthly billing cycle with the coupon code UNLOADED2009 to save 50% on your first month of service with any VPSLink plan.

Xen Virtual Private Servers at New York City Datacenter

Our development team has reached the testing phase for Xen VPS hosting at our New York City datacenter, however, we do not have a set date for availability at this time – you can still consider this good news, though, as we have extended the expiration date for our two week free hosting coupon (NYC50) to September 30th.

If you’ve been waiting to migrate your Xen VPS over to NYC you can rest assured that it will be worth the wait.

Link-1 VPS Exclusive to Xen

The Link-1 plan is one of our most popular entry-level virtual private servers – the price is just right for many, however, we’ve found that the memory allocation (in combination with our OpenVZ platform’s hard-limit swap space configuration) isn’t the best choice for those who are unfamiliar with the real limitations that 64MB of memory creates.

Regular inquiries about “bugs” within the Link-1 environment (hey, technically those memory errors are a feature when you’re running on 64MB) have presented us with a dilemma: how should we continue to offer an inexpensive low-memory plan which meets the needs and expectations of seasoned memory-tweaking Linux ninjas but works “out of the box” for subscribers who have yet to learn the art of compiling everything from source via distcc?

(Should you happen to be one of the aforementioned memory-tweaking ninjas, please keep in mind that even ninja masters begin their training with a little bit of swap space to cushion the impact of a flying kick delivered by memory alloc returned NULL)

We decided that we would encourage (strongly encourage) those who have selected the Link-1 plan to go with our Xen platform and get the swap space they need to use native package management utilities, compile things in-place, and dodge the most devastating of memory alloc’s attacks.

What if you already have (and love and might even want another) Link-1 on OpenVZ? We’ve got you covered – existing VPSLink accounts will always have the option to sign up for the Link-1 on OpenVZ or Xen from the My.VPSLink.com > Services > Add Services order form.

… and, if you’re new to VPSLink and think you can handle the fury of memory alloc, nemesis to all and bane of many, we ultimately cannot stop you. Add &override_l1=1 to the address bar at our order form or follow this Link-1 OpenVZ order link to confront your destiny in a low memory environment.
