(The Hosting News) – HP has filed a lawsuit against its ex-CEO Mark Hurd, who was recently named the new President at Oracle.

HP claims that Hurd puts “HP’s most valuable trade secrets and confidential information in peril,” by accepting the position at Oracle.

Although Hurd never signed a non-compete agreement, but he did however sign confidentiality agreements. HP claims that this makes his job at Oracle impossible. “By working at Oracle, he cannot help but utilize and disclose HP’s trade secrets and confidential information,” HP claims in its lawsuit.

(The Hosting News) – According to a study released on Wednesday, close to two-thirds of global internet users and nearly three-quarters of american internet users have fallen victim to online online crime.

The “Norton Cybercrime Report: The Human Impact” used more than 7,000 people in 14 countries to conduct the study.

The study also found that while one-quarter of participants said they would expect to become online crime victims, only half said they would change their web surfing habits after becoming a victim. Of those victims, only 44 percent actually reported the crime to authorities.

The findings also show that computer viruses and malware are the most common types  of attacks with 51 percent reporting they had been impacted by them. Online scams was second with 10 percent reporting, followed by phishing with 9 percent and a tie at 7 percent reporting social network profile hacking, online credit card fraud and sexual predation.

(The Hosting News) – Cloud Linux Inc. and Ksplice Inc. are pleased to announce the world’s first rebootless Linux distribution aimed at serving the needs of hosting service providers: CloudLinux with Ksplice Uptrack. Incorporating both CloudLinux – the leading Linux distribution for service providers that increases security, stability and control of the server environment for more efficient and profitable operations – and Ksplice Uptrack – the revolutionary “rebootless” update service – CloudLinux with Ksplice Uptrack constitutes a game-changing development for hosting service providers. The new combined offering will install CloudLinux kernel updates without the need to reboot your server.

Hundreds of the world’s cloud-computing providers, Web hosting firms and enterprise Linux installations use Ksplice Uptrack to update their kernels seamlessly, without disruption to customers. Linux distributions require a reboot about once a month to stay up to date with important kernel security updates that not only demand maintenance time from staff but also cause downtime for customers. Today’s launch brings the Ksplice instant update technology to the world’s leading Linux distribution for shared service providers: CloudLinux.

“We see a lot of interest and demand for CloudLinux from the hosting community because it has demonstrated a unique ability to add stability to hosting platforms which delivers important reliability to customers” said Jeff Arnold, CEO of Ksplice Inc. “This focus on stability and performance is very much in tune with our vision. This is why we are delighted to be adding support for CloudLinux”

Major Linux distributions ask their users to install a kernel update roughly once each month, which requires a reboot. Until a system can be updated, it can be vulnerable to security flaws. By allowing users to install kernel updates without downtime, Uptrack slashes the cost of system administration and bolsters security. In real-world tests, Uptrack dramatically increases the actual rate of compliance with security updates.

Cloud Linux invented the Lightweight Virtual Environment™, a kernel-level technology that limits the amount of resources (CPU, I/O, memory) available to a specific process or customer. LVE isolates specific hardware resources in a lightweight environment and prevents one tenant on a shared server from affecting others – especially due to a sudden peak load from a single tenant. Some key benefits of CloudLinux are:

Increased server density and capability without increasing risk
Better reliability and performance from each server
Protection from hackers and poorly written scripts that drain resources and cause downtime
Reduced operational costs related to hardware, electricity, datacenter space and management costs
Better utilization of exiting infrastructure
Increase uptime since no one account can take down or slow down an entire server

“We are extremely excited to be supported by Ksplice, since it is such a revolutionary and innovative service,” said Igor Seletskiy, CEO and Founder of CloudLinux. “Web hosting companies dread server reboots, and anything that helps them avoid downtime is a great improvement. Many of our customers already use Ksplice, and having full support for CloudLinux gives our customers the ability to benefit from this innovative solution.”

CloudLinux with Ksplice Uptrack can be purchased from Cloud Linux. Ksplice Uptrack is also available for existing CloudLinux customers from the Ksplice Web site, at www.ksplice.com. The monthly subscription fee is $3.95 a system for the first 20 systems, and $2.95 for each system thereafter.

In talking to our customers, one of the things that I hear consistently is that customers appreciate our open solution stack.  What does that mean?  Well, a couple of things—first of all, it means that our innovations are individually available—you can connect a UCS to any upstream Ethernet and Fibre Channel switch, you can connect the server of your choice to a Nexus switch and still take advantage of OTV, FabricPath or unified fabric and you can run the Nexus 1000V in pretty much any hardware environment supported by vSphere.

The other thing this means is that we build solutions stacks with insertion points for our partners so our customers can take advantage our our solutions while still working with their favorite data center vendors.  Both vBlocks (Cisco, EMC, VMware) and SMT (Cisco, NetApp, VMWare) were initial examples of this approach.

Today, we are adding to the list with a newly announced desktop virtualization solution developed in partnership with Citrix.   Desktop virtualization is taking off with our customer for a number of reasons from reducing costs, to faster app deployment, to improving regulatory compliance and we have been listening to what our customers have been asking for.

The new solution with Citrix XenDesktop combines Cisco UCS and Citrix desktop virtualization technologies including FlexCast™ and HDX™, to deliver a cost-effective, scalable and high-performance solution for hosting, securing and optimizing the delivery of virtual desktops and applications.

In this video Ben Gibson of Cisco and Gordon Payne of Citrix discuss the announcement:

Of course, we are not going to roll out a me-too solution….

(The Hosting News) – In the crowded arena of web development and consulting, the most successful service providers often utilize their own pre-built software platforms and frameworks when building social websites for their customers. This competitive advantage makes it difficult for smaller design consultants and hosting providers to attract customers that want their own online communities, as they often have to build them from scratch or use non-optimal open source alternatives.

Webligo, a Los Angeles-based social software publisher, has announced a new reseller program that lets these developers and consultants build their customers’ social networks using the SocialEngine platform. The program enables resellers to utilize the SocialEngine source code and re-brand it before utilizing it for their clients’ projects, making them more competitive with larger providers that have their own proprietary platforms.

Hosting providers will also benefit from the program. With the demand for custom, branded social communities on the rise, providers can now offer hosting accounts with social networks pre-installed.
